6 Great Ways to Make Exercise Fun

Congratulations on making the decision to get fit. Just the motivation to start exercising is a big step—one that often gets overlooked by many. Starting a fitness regimen is the easy part. The hard part is staying faithful. Many times, ideas run low and exercise starts to become boring, which tends to lead you right back to square one—wanting to find a routine that suits you long enough to see results. It is possible to get the results you want, but variety is key. Here are some ways to make exercise fun.


Joining a class does not necessarily mean that you have to get a gym membership. Many places allow you to pay on a per-class basis. If the treadmill starts to bore you, try to add variety with dancing, kickboxing, yoga, or anything else that sounds fun and interesting to you. There are plenty of options to make exercise fun.


Yes, this means music. Music is a great way to make exercise fun. Bust out that iPod or crank up the stereo and get moving to your own special groove. Have songs that will motivate you to get physically active. Make sure you keep the songs as upbeat as possible and mix them up for different exercises. Listening to your favorite songs will get you through a full-body workout quickly.


Sometimes exercising in water is a great alternative to your normal routine. Water aerobics will help you lose inches, without putting strain on your joints. If you’re not really into doing a water aerobics class, try making one of your exercise days dedicated to swimming laps around the pool. This is a great way to get your heart pumping as well as a great way to break up the monotony of your fitness regimen.


If you dislike working out alone, a great way to make working out more enjoyable is to have a friend workout with you. If you both want to reach a certain goal, turn your workouts into some fun and friendly competition. Not only will it give you support, but it will give you motivation to actually achieve all the goals you’ve set. You can monitor each other’s progress and keep each other on the path to a healthier lifestyle.


If you like to watch sports, you may just like to play them as well. This is another wonderful way to make exercise fun. Check with local recreation centers or churches to see if there are any local teams that play in your area. Many times, there are women’s or co-ed teams that meet up to play volleyball, roller hockey, softball or basketball on a regular basis. If you don’t really have the desire to join a team, try rock climbing, tennis, racquetball, cycling, and marathon walks or runs. The choices are endless.


This does not mean that your reward for a job well done of working out should be a huge meal or bag of sugary treats. Instead of resorting to food as a reward, try paying your piggy bank a dollar or two every time you exercise. At the end of a month (or longer), take the money you’ve accumulated and go buy that CD or pair of jeans you’ve been wanting forever. Maybe you could take a weekend road trip for some rest and relaxation. Be creative!

Keeping your workouts full of variety will get you results much faster. Don’t let boredom become an issue—make exercise fun and enjoy the benefits.
